Darby’s agent did not respond to messages, and a spokesman for the Eagles said Darby was unlikely to comment Friday.

Darby’s statement vouching for Winston was the second time he had publicly come to the defense of his friend and former Florida State teammate. After Winston was accused of having sexually assaulted fellow student Erica Kinsman in December 2012 while at Florida State, Darby and fellow teammate Chris Casher provided criminal investigators with affidavits indicating that they saw Winston having consensual sex with Kinsman.

A spokeswoman for Winston said Friday afternoon that the NFL had yet to inform him of any suspension, and she said she could not comment on the information from Banks or any aspect of the investigation.

The Angels have won two straight after dropping seven of eight. They handed the Blue Jays their ninth loss in 10 road games.

Calhoun launched a two-run homer off John Axford (1-1) in the fourth inning to put the Angels ahead 4-3. The right fielder went 1 for 3 with a walk, scoring on Martin Maldonado’s double in the sixth, and is 4 for 10 in three games since returning from a stint on the disabled list because of a strained oblique muscle.

He looks so calm, so comfortable out there. I think he’s seeing the ball much better, more plate coverage. All the things that lead to positive results seem to be in his game, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of Calhoun, who was hitting .145 before the injury.

Valbuena made it 6-3 with his two-run shot to center field in the fifth, and added a solo drive to right in the seventh. It was his eighth career multihomer game.

The streaky Valbuena was 5 for 40 over his previous 11 games and hadn’t homered in his last 18. Valbuena went deep twice in that game at Detroit on May 29, and Scioscia had thought that would mark the beginning of a turnaround.

Panthers sign offensive lineman Norman Price

Posted on by

The Panthers were short a big-name guard on Monday, and added one to the roster later.

According to the league’s daily personnel notice, the Panthers signed offensive lineman Norman Price.

Price spent last year on the Jaguars practice squad, and the 2016 season on the 49ers practice squad as an undrafted rookie from Southern Miss.

In the pass-heavy NFC North, one Minnesota has been able to do is use double-A-gap pressure from linebackers to influence a quarterback to throw to his hot route, just for one of those linebackers to make the tackle after bailing out from a blitz look. That can work if you have an all-world athlete like Anthony Barr or Eric Kendricks.

Chicago found its super athletic linebacker in Roquan Smith, a first-round pick out of Georgia who ran a 4.51-second 40-yard dash at the combine. While linebacker may not be a valued position in today’s NFL, an athletic linebacker like Smith will go a long way in a division like the NFC North.

I’m not worried about the contract yet man, Dunlap said, via Scott Eisberg of WCIV. You just go out here and you play football. The film that I put out there already speaks for itself, I feel like I’ve already earned the respect of my peers. I’ve been fortunate enough to be an All-Star, being in the Pro Bowl. The film speaks for itself. I’m just going to continue to put good film out there and let whatever happens happen.

The Bengals hold their mandatory minicamp next week and then have several weeks off before training camp. We’ll see if the team and Dunlap use that time to come together on an extension.

Bills owner Terry Pegula was the graduation speaker at his former high school.

A look at the plans for the Dolphins defensive backfield.

Cleveland’s success will also hinge on Gordon staying available.

He said this is the first time he’s participated in the team’s complete offseason program, and as he nears the start of another new season and another shot at redemption, his goals have shifted.

More than anything, I really just want to win, he said.

NFL free agency: Falcons sign veteran defensive tackle Terrell McClain

Posted on by

Veteran defensive tackle Terrell McClain has found a new team.

McClain agreed to a contract with the Falcons, the team announced Friday. Terms of the contract were not immediately disclosed.

McClain had also visited with the Cowboys, 49ers and Dolphins, according to a report from the NFL Network.

McClain signed a four-year, $21 million contract with the Redskins in March 2017. He recorded 20 tackles and two sacks last season but was waived in late April after Washington picked a pair of defensive linemen in the draft.

“I’m really happy about the guys stepping up,” said Kuznetsov, “like Nate Walker, you know, he played unbelievable, that little motherf—–r. That’s the only word I have for him.”

Even when they’re not in the lineup, the younger Capitals have kept things light and positive, while keeping their teammates confident that they can rise to the occasion if called upon.

Sherman told ESPN that his Achilles “felt great” after running on it. He also said, “I’ll be ready for training camp, but (the team) is going to be overly cautious either way.”

The 30-year-old was released from the Seahawks in March, but was quickly picked up by the 49ers with the hopes he would be ready for full activities at some point between May and June. Sherman will need a little more time before returning to full-contact, but he is expected to be a full participant for training camp at the end of July.

This play is everything for Cleveland. Rozier switches onto Thompson. Boston should be fine with that. Brown panics, and tags out Rozier. Problem: That leaves Rozier on LeBron.

LeBron too often has checked out when other Cavs run the offense. As Brian Windhorst has written, he is resting on the court. Some such rest is unavoidable. The burden on LeBron is too big. (Related: Irving plays for Boston, and Thomas just had hip surgery.) But for Cleveland to have a chance, he has to cut those resting possessions by something like half. Perhaps shifting more off-the-bounce duty to Hill kept LeBron’s tank full.ravens_010

Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge power Yankees past Red Sox

Posted on by

Aaron Judge broke a tie game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, and that was the difference in a 3-2 victory for the Yankees over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees notched their 16th in their past 17 games, and they have won seven straight overall.

Their 16-1 run marks the best 17-game stretch for the Yankees since they went 16-1 in June of 1953. That stretch was part of a 21-1 clip from May 27 through June 18, 1953.

The Yankees have now won 10 consecutive games at Yankee Stadium, their first 10-game home winning streak since 2008.

Tuesday’s win pulled the Yankees even with the Red Sox in the standings, with both teams sitting at 25-10. That record has the teams leading the AL East and all of baseball.

Tuesday was the first time the Yankees and Red Sox went head-to-head with the top two records in baseball since June 2, 2002.

The highest, of course, belongs to the legend himself, Joe Namath, whom the Jets drafted first overall in 1965. Namath started nine of 14 games as a rookie. And in his fourth season, he led the Jets to their lone Super Bowl championship.

Does Namath think Darnold this summer can beat out Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater, to win the Jets’ Week 1 starting job?

It won’t be easy, Namath said Tuesday at BTIG Charity Day in Manhattan.

First of all, anybody that’s starting on that field has to have convinced their teammates that he’s worthy to start, Namath said.sharks-007

Julio Jones, absent from workouts, deletes Falcons pics from Instagram

Posted on by

Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones has yet to join the Atlanta Falcons for offseason workouts, according to multiple sources, and the deletion of Falcons photos from his Instagram page fueled speculation of unrest between Jones and the team.

Jones was not with his teammates when the Falcons officially began offseason workouts last week but was expected back this week. He wasn’t present, however, when the players returned to the field Monday.

The team said the deletion of the Falcons photos had to do with Jones wanting a “fresh start” on social media and nothing more.

The Falcons have prioritized signing quarterback Matt Ryan to an extension this offseason, with Ryan having one year and $19.25 million left on his deal. General manager Thomas Dimitroff also talked about nose tackle Grady Jarrett, left tackle Jake Matthews and free safety Ricardo Allen possibly being extended. The immediate focus is preparing for Thursday’s NFL draft.

The Falcons have said it is important to have Jones healthy this offseason to put in the practice time with Ryan. Jones is working out with Hall of Fame receiver Terrell Owens.

Jones’ absence from the team will become more of a concern if he’s not around for mandatory minicamp, June 12-14.

Acuna notched an eighth-inning single and also the game-tying run as the Braves earned their first win in the four-game series.

Acuna wore No. 13, just like fellow Venezuelans Dave Concepcion and Ozzie Guillen.

Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Acuna acquitted himself well.

“I thought he was really good,” Snitker said. “Nothing affected him. He wasn’t overwhelmed. He went out and played his game.”

Acuna rose from Class A to Triple-A in 2017, hitting a combined .325 with 21 home runs, 82 RBIs and 44 stolen bases. Then he was selected MVP of the Arizona Fall League. Acuna is ranked No. 1 on ESPN Insider Keith Law’s top 100 prospects list. He began this season as MLB.com’s No. 2 overall prospect behind Angels two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani.

Acuna got Braves fans enthused this spring, batting .432 with four homers, four stolen bases and a 1.247 OPS in 16 exhibition games.

“He’s a talented young man,” Snitker said prior to Wednesday’s win. “He just needs to let the talent flow and enjoy playing here.”

Acuna said the best piece of advice he ever received was from Seattle second baseman Robinson Cano.

“In this game, you always have to stay positive and never lose faith,” Acuna said before his debut.sl_cardinals_060

Bills, among others, bringing Baker Mayfield in for predraft visit

Posted on by

The Bills pick 12th in the 2018 NFL Draft, and everybody knows they want a quarterback. So they know they have to cast a wide net.

But Baker Mayfield keeps turning up in that net.

After Darnold at No. 1 overall, there’s a good chance all quarterbacks drafted in Round 1 will be selected following a trade. The Jaguars re-signed Blake Bortles to what amounts to a Mike Glennon-Bears-like contract. They still need a quarterback for the future and not much else. Trading this year’s first-round pick and next year’s first-round pick (and maybe a little more) could do the trick.

The Raiders added Jordy Nelson to their offense in free agency, and they likely will use the middle and later rounds of the draft to tweak that side of the ball to new coach Jon Gruden’s liking. But they need to continue adding talent across their defense. The secondary isn’t Oakland’s biggest weakness, but Fitzpatrick is easy to like and could give the Raiders another playmaker.

In signing TJ McDonald a year ago, the Dolphins addressed a need at safety but didn’t fix the problem for the long term. Maintaining a strong secondary would be wise after losing their defensive leader up front in Ndamukong Suh.

A league source tells PFT that Griffin recently worked out for the Ravens, as part of a courtship that began last year. A contract was offered near the start of training camp in 2017, at about the same time the Ravens engaged in a public debate over whether to sign Colin Kaepernick.

Griffin spent last year out of football, after his lone season with the Browns. He spent 2012 through 2015 in Washington, a team that ultimately devoted three first-round picks and a second-round pick to acquiring him.

Griffin became the 2012 NFL offensive rookie of the year, but a knee injury originally suffered against the Ravens derailed Griffin’s career. He was benched in 2015 for Kirk Cousins.

The Ravens haven’t ruled out selecting a quarterback in the first round of the draft, but Joe Flacco remains entrenched as the starter — in large part because his contract makes it virtually impossible for the Ravens to move on.bills_067

Kyle Long expects “no limitations” this season after three surgeries

Posted on by

Bears guard Kyle Long has spent a lot of time in the operating room over the last couple of years, but he’s feeling optimistic about his health heading into the 2018 season.

As more players have mastered the Eurostep, a growing subset has also starting marking successful Eurosteps with an exaggerated, start-and-stop shimmy:

Boogie down, big fella. When a center pulls a Eurostep, he can do whatever the hell he wants.

Russell Westbrook is probably the league’s preeminent Eurostep mime. He’ll bust out two or three in a row, even during live play. He spasm-dances his way back on defense.

You’ve almost certainly seen this running, right-handed beauty by now. We all love Kuzma’s audacious 3s, and the way Lakers fans sing “KUUUUUZZZZ” when they see him rising. Everyone shoots 3s now. There are maybe a half-dozen guys with a bills_055polished skyhook. That thing is magic.

Quarterback Johnny Manziel, a failed first-round pick of the Browns in 2014, is now blaming the Browns for not realizing that they were drafting a guy who prefers to wing it.

“If Cleveland did any of their homework they would have known I wasn’t a guy who came in every day and watched film,” Manziel said in a visit to The Dan Patrick Show. “I wasn’t a guy who really knew the X’s and O’s of football.”

He’s right, but at the time the Browns supposedly should have been doing their homework, Manziel was doing everything he could to create the impression that he was fully committed to football. Manziel was so focused on football that a decision to visit the Nike factory in Oregon in February 2014 actually made waves.

So it’s now Cleveland’s fault for not realizing he was pretending to be something he isn’t?

Moving to his left, a quick crossover dribble with his right hand allowed Simmons to begin showing his quickness.

Posted on by

Ben Simmons sized up Doug McDermott as the two were isolated against each other near the foul line elbow, and quickly realized that he was not being guarded by someone who will be receiving any Defensive Player of the Year votes.

As McDermott fruitlessly swiped at the ball with his feet planted flat, Simmons scooted around him and went in for dunk.

Simmons was unable to record another triple-double (he leads all rookies with 12), finishing with 16 points, nine assists and seven rebounds to go along with four steals.

Rovert Covington helped out with point-rebound double-doubles, J.J. Redick had a team-high 18 points, and there was not a heck of a lot else to autopsy after an afternoon matinee game that was as unremarkable as McDermott’s defensive prowess.

Except for this: Philadelphia recorded 32 assists, extending their NBA-high streak of having at least 20 assists to 33 consecutive games.

“It’s not easy to win in this league, 14 games in a row,” said Marco Belinelli, who added 15 points. “We are playing good basketball right now, on defense and offense too. I think today we didn’t play a good game, but we found a way to win this game.”

Manziel participated in The Spring League on Saturday, finishing 9-of-15 for 82 yards and a touchdown. He was also sacked three times. The former Cleveland Browns quarterback played about half of the game, the first of two in the Spring League, a developmental league for NFL hopefuls.

Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com said he spoke to a number of scouts from the NFL and CFL about what they were seeing from Manziel, and the consensus seemed to be that he was “attentive and interactive.” Spring League head of operations Terry Shea, who has coached many NFL quarterbacks, said Manziel was asking the right questions.

“We’ll introduce him to, say, a play where a quarterback can go to the line of scrimmage and have a’check with me’ to one run or another. And then he’ll say,’Coach, I understand doing it that way, but would you ever consider it this way instead, and here’s why?'” Shea said. “He’s not challenging. He’s inquiring, and that shows me an active and engaged mind.”

Shea also believes Manziel has an NFL future.bills_008

Assigning blame for Yankees’ heartbreaking collapse vs. Blue Jays

Posted on by

Josh Donaldson was walking to the plate. David Robertson looked into his dugout. Looking back at him: Yankees manager Aaron Boone and pitching coach Larry Rothschild.

One, Boone said, the Yankees determined before the game that Smoak was the better matchup for Robertson than Donaldson. Going into the afternoon, Smoak was hitless in five at-bats with four strikeouts and a walk vs. the righty. Donaldson He was 3-for-8 (.375 BA) with two homers, five RBI and a strikeout against Robertson.

So, the way Boone made it sound, the Yankees would have wanted to skip Donaldson for Smoak anyway. That’s even considering Smoak was 2-for-3 on the day and had two innings earlier blasted a two-run homer off Tommy Kahnle. It was also considering Donaldson was playing with what the Blue Jays were calling a dead arm — which showed on several of his throws Saturday.

His breaking ball we feel like is a good matchup for Smoak there, Boone said. To Smoak’s credit, he spoiled some tough ones…. Qe liked the matchup, as much as you can against a really good hitter.

Then there was this: The Yankees just let Robertson choose what he wanted. It seemed like neither Boone nor Rothschild were going to challenge Robertson. It was his call.

Who do we like against which guy Boone said. We communicate with our players, too. Communicate with Robbie there about the preference and simple as that. It’s not just one a whim. That’s the matchup we wanted.

He’s the one who let Robertson make the call. Sounds logical, right In that situation, go with what your veteran, All-Star reliever feels comfortable with. Put him in the most comfortable situation. At the same time, it’s worth questioning whether he should have overruled Robertson. Yes, the track record says Robertson vs. Smoak was the better matchup, but Donaldson appeared to be playing at something less than 100 percent, and Smoak had hit a long homer in his previous at-bat off another righty. Sometimes you go with the book, other times you go with the gut. The book won, and it looked like it wasn’t even close.

It was his decision to pitch to Smoak. He didn’t get the job done. He came close, but not close enough. Also didn’t help that he put on two runners before deciding to walk Donaldson. Russell Martin hit a single to start the inning and, one out later, Aledmys Diaz doubled to right field. Devon Travis grounded out for out No. 2.

Palmieri will play after leaving Saturday’s 4-3 win over the New York Islanders after taking a high stick under the right eye during the third period. Forward Marcus Johansson was activated off injured reserve on Sunday and traveled to Montreal, but he will not play.patriots_149-223x223
