Moving to his left, a quick crossover dribble with his right hand allowed Simmons to begin showing his quickness.

Posted on by

Ben Simmons sized up Doug McDermott as the two were isolated against each other near the foul line elbow, and quickly realized that he was not being guarded by someone who will be receiving any Defensive Player of the Year votes.

As McDermott fruitlessly swiped at the ball with his feet planted flat, Simmons scooted around him and went in for dunk.

Simmons was unable to record another triple-double (he leads all rookies with 12), finishing with 16 points, nine assists and seven rebounds to go along with four steals.

Rovert Covington helped out with point-rebound double-doubles, J.J. Redick had a team-high 18 points, and there was not a heck of a lot else to autopsy after an afternoon matinee game that was as unremarkable as McDermott’s defensive prowess.

Except for this: Philadelphia recorded 32 assists, extending their NBA-high streak of having at least 20 assists to 33 consecutive games.

“It’s not easy to win in this league, 14 games in a row,” said Marco Belinelli, who added 15 points. “We are playing good basketball right now, on defense and offense too. I think today we didn’t play a good game, but we found a way to win this game.”

Manziel participated in The Spring League on Saturday, finishing 9-of-15 for 82 yards and a touchdown. He was also sacked three times. The former Cleveland Browns quarterback played about half of the game, the first of two in the Spring League, a developmental league for NFL hopefuls.

Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com said he spoke to a number of scouts from the NFL and CFL about what they were seeing from Manziel, and the consensus seemed to be that he was “attentive and interactive.” Spring League head of operations Terry Shea, who has coached many NFL quarterbacks, said Manziel was asking the right questions.

“We’ll introduce him to, say, a play where a quarterback can go to the line of scrimmage and have a’check with me’ to one run or another. And then he’ll say,’Coach, I understand doing it that way, but would you ever consider it this way instead, and here’s why?'” Shea said. “He’s not challenging. He’s inquiring, and that shows me an active and engaged mind.”

Shea also believes Manziel has an NFL future.bills_008

Assigning blame for Yankees’ heartbreaking collapse vs. Blue Jays

Posted on by

Josh Donaldson was walking to the plate. David Robertson looked into his dugout. Looking back at him: Yankees manager Aaron Boone and pitching coach Larry Rothschild.

One, Boone said, the Yankees determined before the game that Smoak was the better matchup for Robertson than Donaldson. Going into the afternoon, Smoak was hitless in five at-bats with four strikeouts and a walk vs. the righty. Donaldson He was 3-for-8 (.375 BA) with two homers, five RBI and a strikeout against Robertson.

So, the way Boone made it sound, the Yankees would have wanted to skip Donaldson for Smoak anyway. That’s even considering Smoak was 2-for-3 on the day and had two innings earlier blasted a two-run homer off Tommy Kahnle. It was also considering Donaldson was playing with what the Blue Jays were calling a dead arm — which showed on several of his throws Saturday.

His breaking ball we feel like is a good matchup for Smoak there, Boone said. To Smoak’s credit, he spoiled some tough ones…. Qe liked the matchup, as much as you can against a really good hitter.

Then there was this: The Yankees just let Robertson choose what he wanted. It seemed like neither Boone nor Rothschild were going to challenge Robertson. It was his call.

Who do we like against which guy Boone said. We communicate with our players, too. Communicate with Robbie there about the preference and simple as that. It’s not just one a whim. That’s the matchup we wanted.

He’s the one who let Robertson make the call. Sounds logical, right In that situation, go with what your veteran, All-Star reliever feels comfortable with. Put him in the most comfortable situation. At the same time, it’s worth questioning whether he should have overruled Robertson. Yes, the track record says Robertson vs. Smoak was the better matchup, but Donaldson appeared to be playing at something less than 100 percent, and Smoak had hit a long homer in his previous at-bat off another righty. Sometimes you go with the book, other times you go with the gut. The book won, and it looked like it wasn’t even close.

It was his decision to pitch to Smoak. He didn’t get the job done. He came close, but not close enough. Also didn’t help that he put on two runners before deciding to walk Donaldson. Russell Martin hit a single to start the inning and, one out later, Aledmys Diaz doubled to right field. Devon Travis grounded out for out No. 2.

Palmieri will play after leaving Saturday’s 4-3 win over the New York Islanders after taking a high stick under the right eye during the third period. Forward Marcus Johansson was activated off injured reserve on Sunday and traveled to Montreal, but he will not play.patriots_149-223x223

Raiders sign Jordy Nelson to reported 2-year, $15M deal

Posted on by

The Oakland Raiders announced the signing of free-agent wide receiver Jordy Nelson on Thursday. Financial details weren’t disclosed, but Nelson inked a two-year contract worth $15 million with $13 million guaranteed, NFL Network analyst James Jones (also his former teammate) reports. Nelson will likely start alongside Amari Cooper following the reported release of Michael Crabtree. The 32-year-old’s streak of 1,000-yard seasons was stopped at three in 2017, as he struggled without his longtime quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

So, we know the Giants blew away the Patriots financially, because Boston has some of the best hospitals in the world and that’s where Hudson has been receiving his treatment. Houston and Cleveland were also in Solder’s final four. Houston has MD Anderson and Cleveland has the Cleveland Clinic. Solder could not have chosen four better cities known for their cancer centers.

The Giants surely were able to ease any concern Solder had about his son’s future treatment with information about Sloan Kettering in Manhattan and the Children’s Cancer Institute at Hackensack Hospital where the Giants have participated in fundraising efforts.

That’s just what hit me the hardest, when you walk into a hospital or see a sick child, I hated to see that, he said.

Ebron was released by the Detroit Lions after four seasons, having failed to live up to his lofty draft status. However, the athletic tight end is just 24 years old and has three 500-yard seasons on his resume, including a 61-catch, 711-yard campaign in 2015 in just 13 games. All three interested teams already have locked-in starters at tight end but are likely doing their due diligence on one of the more intriguing offensive names left on the market.

I hated to see a child not having just a great childhood. I thought of my childhood and it was easy. It was all fun and games and school and friends and family, there were no struggles, and they shouldn’t be struggling, stuck in a hospital for certain periods of time, where they have cancer and have to go through chemotherapy. I just hated it for the kids.

Nate was giving Hudson a bath when he felt a lump on the left side of his belly. He and his wife Lexi didn’t know what it was and were praying it would just go away. A few days later, it was still there. That began the journey that led to Hudson being diagnosed with kidney cancer. Hudson was treated with chemotherapy and the sight of a tube sticking out of his chest and needles stuck in him was overwhelming.ravens_071

Bold Bears set up for success by following Eagles’ Super Bowl blueprint

Posted on by

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery – or so they say. If that’s truly the case, the Eagles should be blushing over how much the Bears clearly respect the way Philadelphia transformed its once talent-poor roster into a Super Bowl winner in just a few years. Chicago started down the same path as the Eagles last offseason, and has continued to follow the blueprint this time around.

Just like the Eagles and Carson Wentz, the Bears’ plan is centered around a young quarterback in Mitch Trubisky, and started with the dramatic trade up last year to snag him with the No. 2 overall pick.

The Rams gave up more to get Peters. They surrendered a 2018 4th-round pick and 2019 2nd-round pick for Peters. Talent-wise, he’s worth it, but Peters had issues with the Chiefs, which led them to part ways with him. The big question is whether the Rams can keep him in line to ensure they get a good return from him on the field. The Rams also retained cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman, signed Sam Shields, and tagged safety Lamarcus Joyner.

Tyler Eifert wasn’t sure what free agency would be like.

The 27-year-old tight end is healthy, for March, but after back surgeries ended 2016 and 2017 prematurely and with additional surgeries to his knee and ankle the last two years, he knew teams might view him with a wary eye.

As other tight ends moved around the league on multi-year deals, Eifert watched. He saw the years and numbers flying around, but things heated up for him Thursday.

“But at the end of the day I knew where I wanted to be, which was with the Bengals,” he said. “From the beginning, I told everyone that it would take something pretty special for me to leave. It would have to be an obvious decision.”

He did have a decision to make, though. Multiple league sources told The Enquirer Eifert had to decide between the Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams.

But Eifert wanted to remain in Cincinnati. canucks_004

Russell Wilson gets chance to bat in Yankees spring training game

Posted on by

What happens when one of the top NFL quarterbacks of his generation pulls a Bo Jackson and plays in an MLB game?

Russell Wilson stepped to the plate in the Yankees’ spring training game against the Braves Friday afternoon, with the eyes of both MLB and the NFL upon him. While he ended up striking out, the Super Bowl champion QB certainly didn’t embarrass himself.

“I knew I faced him! That’s funny,” Shreve said. “I knew he played football and knew he was leaving to play football, but I didn’t know what he was going to turn into.”

This year, however, many of those free agents are at a MLBPA free agent camp, the union’s first of its kinds since the players’ strike in 1995, with Astros manager Bo Porter leading the workouts.

“The thought process was, if we’re gonna do it, let’s do it the way spring training is supposed to be run,” Porter said about coaching the camp, per ESPN.com.

Although there is still hope for the free agents, many have started to see the warning signs after waiting for months without a call, including free-agent infielder Chris Johnson. He’s not alone as nearly a third of those who were free agents in November are still without a team.

“After you get past New Year’s and haven’t heard anything — not even a little interest — obviously you start to worry in the offseason. You’re like, ‘Man, is this it? Am I done? Am I not gonna be able to play anymore?'” Johnson said. “[When] you don’t hear anything, and people start talking about ’20 days until pitchers and catchers [report]’ and things like that, then obviously you start to panic a little bit.”seahawks_122_81a60b72faaac6ef-180x180

It’s going to take more than 40 attempts for Ramirez to reach 30 steals.

Manning has been a hot commodity in the NFL broadcasting circuit, with ESPN looking to replace lead MNF analyst Jon Gruden, now the head coach of the Oakland Raiders . But per Marchand if Manning decides to shift to television it won’t be with the Worldwide Leader:
“Sean is so well-respected at ESPN and throughout our industry and we look forward to his return to college football where he will be a signature voice on many of our biggest games,” said ESPN senior VP Stephanie Druley in a statement .
Hanley Ramirez is not Tom Brady. Ramirez has been a damn good athlete in his own right, but has also been prone to getting thick and stocky. He’s slimmed down before, as he did before the 2016 season. Injuries have been part of what’s robbed him of his all-around athleticism (remember when he was a shortstop?), but he’s also not as young as he once was. While it’s likely that he’s gained some speed back, it’s probably more in the vein of his 2016 numbers.
Hayward signed with the Chargers as a free agent in 2016 after four seasons in Green Bay. Since then, he’s had two straight Pro Bowl appearances and two consecutive Second Team All-Pro honors.
The shutdown corner started all 16 games during the 2017 campaign. Over the past two seasons, he’s recorded 83 total tackles, 11 interceptions, 42 passes defensed, three tackles for loss, and two fumble recoveries.
The Chargers ‘ defense allowed the third-fewest passing yards per game last season (197.3). Securing Hayward seemed like a no-brainer move for general manager Tom Telesco.
The Bengals did not?replenish their offensive line?last offseason after losing Andrew Whitworth and Kevin Zeitler, and it cost them?in both run blocking and pass protection. Nelson’s best position may be guard, but he is athletic enough to settle into a starting role at any position on the line.

Flames in must-win territory vs. Avs

Posted on by

Fresh off a 5-2 road win over the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday, the Calgary Flames will look to build on that momentum when they host the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.

Heading into the afternoon affair at the Scotiabank Saddledome, both the Flames (31-22-9) and Avalanche (32-23-5) are on the outside of the NHL’s Western Conference playoff picture looking in.

“We’re in a dog fight and we know it,” said Calgary defenseman Travis Hamonic following Thursday’s victory that ended a three-game losing streak for the Flames. “We’ve got to start collecting points and stringing some (wins) together.”

Meanwhile, the Avalanche will be looking to bounce back from a 3-2 overtime loss they suffered to the Oilers in Edmonton on Thursday.

“Every game from now on is huge for us,” said rookie center Tyson Jost, who had an assist against the Oilers to extend his point-scoring streak to three games. “Our goal is to be in the playoffs, so we’re going to have to have a lot better than we did (against Edmonton). I know our team’s capable of that.

“Everybody just has to be a little bit better and our compete (level) has to be a little higher. These points are crucial for us because our end goal is the playoffs and we’re not afraid to admit that.”

Left winger Gabriel Bourque said the Avs have extra motivation to win against the Flames because they want to finish their three-game road trip with a 2-0-1 record.

The first 20 picks were decided in Week 17, but the final 12 weren’t be determined until the playoffs were through. The four teams eliminated in the Wild Card round own picks 21-24, and so on until the Super Bowl loser, the New England Patriots, pick No. 31 and the Super Bowl-champion Philadelphia Eagles that get the No. 32 pick.

There were three ties for spots in the draft order, but only the 49ers and Raiders will go to a coin flip to decide. The ties between Washington and Green Bay, and Dallas and Detroit were decided by a tiebreaker of records against common opponents in the NFC.

“Not only did we spend a little too much time in our zone, we couldn’t generate enough offensively,” coach John Stevens said.

The day began with five teams all within three points of each other in the Western Conference playoff race, including the Stars and Kings.jays_878_b5995f17d1a37b9a-180x180

Wolves’ Jimmy Butler leaves game with right knee injury

Posted on by

Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Jimmy Butler left Friday night’s 120-102 loss to the Houston Rockets with a right knee injury.

Butler drove into the paint with about three minutes remaining in the third quarter and missed a short jumper. After grabbing the rebound, he pivoted and planted hard on his right foot, before collapsing to the floor in pain, holding his knee.

“His first reaction was, ‘I’m OK, I’ll be OK,'” Wolves forward Taj Gibson said. “But he was smiling. That was a big thing, and it was a huge relief for everybody in this locker room. He’s a warrior, so we’ve just got to hold it down for him.”

Butler, 28, leads the Timberwolves with 22.4 points per game. He also is tops in the league in minutes played per game at 37.3, but he drew criticism for choosing to sit out the All-Star Game.

Butler told ESPN’s Cassidy Hubbarth before Friday’s game that he’d rather sit out the NBA showcase than miss time with Minnesota.

“I’m not going to say that I want to cut back my minutes [with the Wolves], but when I have an opportunity [to rest], I will,” Butler said.

Ball, who was sidelined for 15 games with a knee injury, had nine points, seven rebounds and six assists in 17 minutes. Isaiah Thomas had 17 points and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Brandon Ingram scored 15 apiece to help Los Angeles stop a three-game slide.

It was Randle’s second triple-double this season and No. 5 for his career. Josh Hart added 12 points and 10 boards as the Lakers enjoyed a 61-29 advantage on the glass.

Wesley Matthews and Harrison Barnes each scored 19 points for the Mavericks (18-41), who have dropped five of six.

Mavericks: Rookie guard Dennis Smith Jr. was one of the players identified in the Yahoo Sports story on federal documents obtained in the FBI’s investigation into college basketball corruption.jaguars_010-223x223
