Dez Bryant won’t be a distraction, says former QB

Posted on by

Former Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant is still looking for that perfect one-year gig, so he can stick it to his previous employer.

And his former quarterback insists Bryant won’t be a problem for whomever decides to employ him.

“There’s a ton of teams he could help,” retired Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo said, via Todd Archer of ESPN. “One thing, I don’t know how many teams will do their homework on it, but Dez is a good teammate and I think sometimes that might get lost in the way that the emotional aspect of things. If I was talking to any of the G.M.s or coaches, I would tell them he’s not going to hurt the locker room in any possible way. He’s going to come out and he’ll be a great teammate when he gets there. I think he’ll have a couple options here soon.”

What’s Romo’s commission should Dez get signed? I don’t know if Dez can still play but with his antics in the past, he has lost the benefit of the doubt.

I think the only people who don’t think Dez is good inside an NFL locker room are people who’ve never played sports. His teammates have always loved him.

Sorry yes, it was Dak’s problem. Dramatic decrease in Comp%, dramatic increase in INTs, DRAMATIC decrease in his rating (about 20 points), both as a passer and overall QBR. He only got sacked 7 more times in 2017 than in 2016, and according to you that was all in one game. OK so he had a bad game (that isn’t all on the line btw, QB decision making plays into sacks as well). And Tyron Smith was only out for 3 games last year – same as 2016 when Dak was sporting a 103+ rating – so no, that isn’t it.

The Cowboys made a move to try to replace Witten. They continue to insist they are happy with the other tight ends on the roster, but Rico Gathers, Geoff Swaim and Blake Jarwin have only nine catches for 94 yards and no touchdowns in 29 career games.

Witten made 1,152 catches for 12,448 yards and 68 touchdownbroncos_061_d6ba102d513d1c9f-180x180s in his career.

So the Cowboys used a fourth-round pick on Stanford tight end Dalton Schultz on Saturday.

Report: Dolphins could build new practice facility in Miami

Posted on by

The Dolphins will upgrade their practice facility within the next four years, and team officials are considering a move to Miami, Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald reports.

The Dolphins have trained at the facility at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida, since 1993.

The Davie complex also serves as home to Dolphins training camp. The Dolphins facility has undergone renovations and improvements, including the addition of an indoor practice field in 2006.

This was worth the risk.

The Cleveland Browns have recently become serious about adding established NFL players to their roster, which indicates that even the slow-moving Cleveland front office is ready to try to win games rather than simply accumulate draft picks.

And the move that best signifies that is the team’s March trade for Jarvis Landry, who after catching an NFL-record 400 passes in his first four seasons with the Miami Dolphins should become the ultimate safety valve in a young but talented Browns offense.

Brandon worked for the Yankees and thereafter the then-Florida Marlins before joining the Bills in 1997. He essentially ran the team in the final years of founder Ralph Wilson’s life, and Brandon steered the franchise through the search for a new owner. The Pegulas were sufficiently impressed to keep him around — and to expand his influence into their hockey operation.

Some have suggested that Brandon won’t be out of work for long. However, the internal investigation and what it uncovered complicates his future prospects.

Prior to bringing in Talib, the Rams also pulled the trigger on a trade for Kansas City Chiefs interception-machine Marcus Peters. And although Peters is entering the final year of his rookie contract, this is an even better move because he’s only 25 years old and will cost Los Angeles just $1.7 million in 2018.

Since entering the league as a first-round pick in 2015, Peters has 19 picks. No other NFL player has more than 14 during that span. broncos_126_b026ea75d03acc23-180x180

Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Judge power Yankees past Red Sox

Posted on by

Aaron Judge broke a tie game with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, and that was the difference in a 3-2 victory for the Yankees over the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees notched their 16th in their past 17 games, and they have won seven straight overall.

Their 16-1 run marks the best 17-game stretch for the Yankees since they went 16-1 in June of 1953. That stretch was part of a 21-1 clip from May 27 through June 18, 1953.

The Yankees have now won 10 consecutive games at Yankee Stadium, their first 10-game home winning streak since 2008.

Tuesday’s win pulled the Yankees even with the Red Sox in the standings, with both teams sitting at 25-10. That record has the teams leading the AL East and all of baseball.

Tuesday was the first time the Yankees and Red Sox went head-to-head with the top two records in baseball since June 2, 2002.

The highest, of course, belongs to the legend himself, Joe Namath, whom the Jets drafted first overall in 1965. Namath started nine of 14 games as a rookie. And in his fourth season, he led the Jets to their lone Super Bowl championship.

Does Namath think Darnold this summer can beat out Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater, to win the Jets’ Week 1 starting job?

It won’t be easy, Namath said Tuesday at BTIG Charity Day in Manhattan.

First of all, anybody that’s starting on that field has to have convinced their teammates that he’s worthy to start, Namath said.sharks-007

Orioles 3B Tim Beckham out at least 6 weeks after surgery

Posted on by

The bad news just keeps coming for the Baltimore Orioles.

Infielder Tim Beckham had core muscle surgery on Thursday morning and is expected to be out until at least early June, according to manager Buck Showalter.

In Beckham’s absence, utility man Danny Valencia has started the past two games at third base, going 1-for-8 with a double and three strikeouts. Valencia is listed as the starter at third again on Thursday, when Baltimore hosts Tampa in the finale of a series that was abbreviated due to a rainout on Tuesday.

To provide depth while Beckham is out, the Orioles acquired Jace Peterson on Tuesday. The veteran utility man, who was most recently with the Yankees, has made 15 career starts at third base.

Herrera lined a three-run homer to right in the first to tie it at 3-3. His solo shot off Max Fried (0-2) gave the Phillies a 4-3 lead in the sixth. Herrera had never hit more than one homer in a game in the majors.

Alfaro drove a two-run shot out to center in the seventh off Chase Whitley, who made his first big league appearance this year after he was brought up from the minors Friday. Alfaro added an RBI single in the eighth and with three hits raised his average from .163 to .208.

Freddie Freeman got the Braves started with an RBI single. Nola almost worked out of a first-and-third, no-out jam by retiring Nick Markakis and Kurt Suzuki on pop-ups. But Ozzie Albies stole home on a double steal with Freeman beating the throw to second base. Ronald Acuna Jr. followed with an RBI double for the third run.

Acuna’s hit had 111.8 mph exit velocity, the hardest-hit ball by Braves this season, according to Statcast.

Teheran didn’t allow a hit in the next two innings before coming out.

The Phillies are off to a 16-9 start, their best mark after 25 games since going 17-8 to begin the 2011 season. A win Saturday would put them eight games over .500 for the first time since finishing the 2011 season with a franchise-best 102 wins.dolphins_008

Julio Jones, absent from workouts, deletes Falcons pics from Instagram

Posted on by

Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones has yet to join the Atlanta Falcons for offseason workouts, according to multiple sources, and the deletion of Falcons photos from his Instagram page fueled speculation of unrest between Jones and the team.

Jones was not with his teammates when the Falcons officially began offseason workouts last week but was expected back this week. He wasn’t present, however, when the players returned to the field Monday.

The team said the deletion of the Falcons photos had to do with Jones wanting a “fresh start” on social media and nothing more.

The Falcons have prioritized signing quarterback Matt Ryan to an extension this offseason, with Ryan having one year and $19.25 million left on his deal. General manager Thomas Dimitroff also talked about nose tackle Grady Jarrett, left tackle Jake Matthews and free safety Ricardo Allen possibly being extended. The immediate focus is preparing for Thursday’s NFL draft.

The Falcons have said it is important to have Jones healthy this offseason to put in the practice time with Ryan. Jones is working out with Hall of Fame receiver Terrell Owens.

Jones’ absence from the team will become more of a concern if he’s not around for mandatory minicamp, June 12-14.

Acuna notched an eighth-inning single and also the game-tying run as the Braves earned their first win in the four-game series.

Acuna wore No. 13, just like fellow Venezuelans Dave Concepcion and Ozzie Guillen.

Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Acuna acquitted himself well.

“I thought he was really good,” Snitker said. “Nothing affected him. He wasn’t overwhelmed. He went out and played his game.”

Acuna rose from Class A to Triple-A in 2017, hitting a combined .325 with 21 home runs, 82 RBIs and 44 stolen bases. Then he was selected MVP of the Arizona Fall League. Acuna is ranked No. 1 on ESPN Insider Keith Law’s top 100 prospects list. He began this season as MLB.com’s No. 2 overall prospect behind Angels two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani.

Acuna got Braves fans enthused this spring, batting .432 with four homers, four stolen bases and a 1.247 OPS in 16 exhibition games.

“He’s a talented young man,” Snitker said prior to Wednesday’s win. “He just needs to let the talent flow and enjoy playing here.”

Acuna said the best piece of advice he ever received was from Seattle second baseman Robinson Cano.

“In this game, you always have to stay positive and never lose faith,” Acuna said before his debut.sl_cardinals_060

Woman details alleged sexual misconduct by Panthers owner Jerry Richardson

Posted on by

One of the women who has alleged sexual and racial workplace misconduct against Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has spoken out after comments by Houston Texans owner Bob McNair at the NFL owners meetings last month.

Sports Illustrated on Thursday published letters by the woman addressing McNair, the NFL, Panthers coach Ron Rivera, Richardson and the next owner of the Panthers. In the letters, she writes about how much she has been hurt by the misconduct and everything that has occurred since SI reported Dec. 17 that three former Panthers employees and one former scout alleged Richardson paid them off in exchange for their silence on the misconduct.

“Every organization’s different,” Pace said. “Every organization comes to different assessments [when it comes to the medicals].”

The Bears attempted to offset Meredith’s loss by aggressively targeting wide receivers Allen Robinson — coming off a torn ACL — and Taylor Gabriel in free agency. The Bears also added pass-catching tight end Trey Burton, who will play a much larger role in Chicago’s offense than he did in Philadelphia.

“I attacked this thing every day, and I did what I needed to do to get to this point, so I had no doubt when I first touched the field that it was where I wanted to be at.”

Cook had reconstructive surgery on Oct. 9. The first two weeks were the toughest part, with Sugarman pushing hard on his knee in the early struggle to regain that critical range of motion in the joint.

“I got a step on him. Felt like I even got grabbed on the way to the rim,” said Oladipo, who finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds. “I tried to shoot a layup, it hit the backboard, then he blocked it. … It was a goaltend. It’s hard to even speak on it. It just sucks, honestly. It really sucks. We fought our way back, we tied the game up, that layup is huge.”

James, who had 44 points and finished two assists shy of a triple-double, smiled when asked about the play.

“I definitely thought it was a goaltend,” James said with a laugh. “Of course I didn’t think it was a goaltend. I try to make plays like that all the time, and I mean he made a heck of a move, got me leaning right and he went left and I just tried to use my recovery speed and get back up there and make a play on the ball. And I was able to make a play.”

The play was never reviewed, as a referee’s whistle is required in order to trigger a review.sl_cardinals_007

Mark Scheifele, P.K. Subban, Viktor Arvidsson, Filip Forsberg will be big factors in Predators-Jets series

Posted on by

Emily Kaplan, national NHL reporter: I’ll take Mark Scheifele of the Winnipeg Jets. Earlier in the season, I polled a bunch of players about who they believed was the most underrated player in the league. One Central Division opponent initially identified Scheifele, then voided his answer. “I would say Scheifele,” he said. “But I think everyone in the league knows he’s been good for some time.” I firmly believe Scheifele would have entered the crowded MVP race this season had he not missed a chunk of time because of injury. Anytime I watch a Jets game, he stands out. The 25-year-old center already has four goals in his first five games these playoffs. I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if he maintains that pace.

Sachin Chandan, ESPN the Magazine researcher: My MVP for the Predators-Jets series is Filip Forsberg because the Predators will count on his scoring to win this series.

“It’s going to be crazy. It’s do or die at this point,” Bucks forward Khris Middleton said. “The crowd in Boston is rowdy, just like they are here. It’s going to be a great game. There are no secrets between teams. It comes down to who has more will.”

Only four players remain from Boston’s 2016-17 team that won a Game 7 against the Washington Wizards in the conference semifinals. Third-year guard Terry Rozier even made special mention of last year’s unexpected hero in Kelly Olynyk (now with Miami). The Celtics are hoping another hero will emerge from their young roster.

“I’m getting there, for sure,” Curry said after practice. “I’ve done a lot in the last two weeks, especially on my feet moving, getting back to movements that I expect to do in the games and try to build that tolerance and intensity. My knee feels pretty good. I don’t have any pain with doing the things that I’ve been doing.”

“That’s my plan — to show the type of person I am now,” Allen told Mortensen. “Whatever team picks me, they are going to get that from me. I will set the record straight for any team, any teammate, the media, and I think once they meet me and they’re around me, see how I act and how I think, that it’s not going to be a problem at all.”

One of the NFL’s most outspoken players, 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman, doesn’t sound concerned about the Tweets. “He was a kid,” Sherman told ESPN’s Josina Anderson. “If you gave most of us a platform early in high school, I’m sure our immaturity would have shown as his did.”

“It’s unique in the sense he was (young) when he Tweeted it but it’s still not acceptable at all,” free agent linebacker Arthur Moats told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Moats is an eight-year veteran who played last season with Pittsburgh. “I think guys would definitely have a talk with him to make sure he knew not to say it anymore,” he said. “The biggest thing is making sure he knows not to say it ever again.”

“Everything just clicked,” Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni said.jets_049

After Torres and Acuna, who are the next impact prospects to know?

Posted on by

Gleyber Torres has been called up, and Ronald Acuna is on track to debut on Wednesday. Now that arguably the top two prospects for fantasy purposes are playing big league ball, who is the minor leaguer you’re following most closely — and potentially stashing on your bench — before an eventual call-up?

What’s to like: Once promoted, he’ll call one of the more hitting-friendly environments his home in Cincinnati’s Great American Ball Park; and he has the kind of polished plate approach that should keep him out of painfully lengthy slumps and probably shorten his adjustment to major league pitching. I think he’s a borderline stash in 10-team, three-bench ESPN leagues right now — if you have the space to, obviously — because I think the call is coming for him within a matter of days, not weeks.

AJ Mass: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette are manning the left side of the infield at Double-A New Hampshire. On Tuesday night, Bichette had two triples and Guerrero drove in his 19th run of April in a win for the Fisher Cats. Both are likely to be in the Toronto Blue Jays lineup in 2019 — but I’m holding out hope that at least one of them gets a second-half look in 2018.

Showing no panic from allowing a goal to Evgeny Kuznetsov 17 seconds into the game and another to Alex Ovechkin 28 seconds into the third period, the back-to-back defending Stanley Cup champions took another series lead in typical Penguins fashion.

Playing without injured forwards Evgeni Malkin and Carl Hagelin, Pittsburgh naturally fed off Crosby, who had a goal and an assist.

“Right from Sid, he led the way for us and it’s right down the lineup,” said Guentzel, who had a goal and two assists and leads the playoffs with 16 points. “You can’t get down. There’s going to be highs and lows throughout the whole series. You’ve got to stick with it to the end and we were happy to get three and end up winning the game.”

Matt Murray stopped 32 of 34 shots, keeping the Penguins in the game and maintaining the lead late with a sprawling stick save on Brett Connolly with 2:30 left. Unsure of what would happen at the other end of the rink with Braden Holtby dialed in, Murray could only keep the puck out as much as possible after allowing the early-period goals to Kuznetsov and Ovechkin.

Murray denied Michal Kempny from point-blank range and kept the puck out from a hard-charging Devante Smith-Pelly early and missed no opportunity to give the Penguins the impressive stop when they needed it.jets_100

Saquon Barkley taken by Giants at No. 2 as team bolsters offensive attack

Posted on by

The New York Giants added another weapon to their offense with the selection of Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft on Thursday night.

Barkley joins an offense loaded with weapons at quarterback Eli Manning’s disposal. They include 2014 first-round pick Odell Beckham Jr., 2016 second-round pick Sterling Shepard and 2017 first-round pick Evan Engram.

Beckham FaceTimed with Barkley not long after the pick, and Manning sent him a congratulatory text. Beckham and Barkley did some training together in Los Angeles this offseason.

“I’m just truly excited to be a part of the New York Giants,” Barkley told ESPN after being selected. “When I got to visit their program, I fell in love. You walk in, you see the Super Bowls right away — and you see that team’s about winning, and hopefully I can go there and help as quickly as possible.”

Gettleman told the Giants’ website he instructed his lieutenants to not field calls after the Cleveland Browns selected quarterback Baker Mayfield No. 1 overall.

It didn’t matter that Darnold was on the board. Gettleman said he could’ve turned in the card for Barkley with 9:58 remaining on the clock. Each team gets 10 minutes to make its selection.

Barkley rushed for 3,843 yards and was the two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year at Penn State. His 5,538 all-purpose yards, 53 total touchdowns and 43 rushing touchdowns were school records. The Giants were enamored with Barkley from the start of the process, and their offseason moves sent them in the direction of the draft’s top running back.

Fleury stopped 33 shots for his third shutout of the playoffs, and the Vegas Golden Knights went on to beat the San Jose Sharks 7-0 in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals.

“I’ve always been a big fan (of the wave), I saw it coming around, heard the music going, sometimes I try to have some fun,” Fleury said with a wide smile. “We did our best to stay sharp for that first game and I think we did. I thought we had the jump on them right away and that was a big part of the win tonight.”

Fleury, who improved to 5-0 in the playoffs, got his 13th career shutout in the playoffs — and second straight. He also blanked Los Angeles 1-0 in Game 4 of the first round.

After getting seven goals from seven different players during a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Kings in the opening round, the Golden Knights matched that with seven players scoring for them on Thursday.jets_137

Bills, among others, bringing Baker Mayfield in for predraft visit

Posted on by

The Bills pick 12th in the 2018 NFL Draft, and everybody knows they want a quarterback. So they know they have to cast a wide net.

But Baker Mayfield keeps turning up in that net.

After Darnold at No. 1 overall, there’s a good chance all quarterbacks drafted in Round 1 will be selected following a trade. The Jaguars re-signed Blake Bortles to what amounts to a Mike Glennon-Bears-like contract. They still need a quarterback for the future and not much else. Trading this year’s first-round pick and next year’s first-round pick (and maybe a little more) could do the trick.

The Raiders added Jordy Nelson to their offense in free agency, and they likely will use the middle and later rounds of the draft to tweak that side of the ball to new coach Jon Gruden’s liking. But they need to continue adding talent across their defense. The secondary isn’t Oakland’s biggest weakness, but Fitzpatrick is easy to like and could give the Raiders another playmaker.

In signing TJ McDonald a year ago, the Dolphins addressed a need at safety but didn’t fix the problem for the long term. Maintaining a strong secondary would be wise after losing their defensive leader up front in Ndamukong Suh.

A league source tells PFT that Griffin recently worked out for the Ravens, as part of a courtship that began last year. A contract was offered near the start of training camp in 2017, at about the same time the Ravens engaged in a public debate over whether to sign Colin Kaepernick.

Griffin spent last year out of football, after his lone season with the Browns. He spent 2012 through 2015 in Washington, a team that ultimately devoted three first-round picks and a second-round pick to acquiring him.

Griffin became the 2012 NFL offensive rookie of the year, but a knee injury originally suffered against the Ravens derailed Griffin’s career. He was benched in 2015 for Kirk Cousins.

The Ravens haven’t ruled out selecting a quarterback in the first round of the draft, but Joe Flacco remains entrenched as the starter — in large part because his contract makes it virtually impossible for the Ravens to move on.bills_067
